...you end up with a whole lot of wonderful surprises upon re-entry into it!
Just like my recent journal on being spontaneous, this little nugget of wisdom came to me quite out of the blue. I was checking my friends page for that oh so prestigious of reasons, procrastination, and discovered that a certain well known gryphon in the fandom had a new DVD out. Had I known this I would have looked forward to its release eagerly, but finding out with complete ignorance beforehand left me with an even greater sense of "Squeeeeeee!"
There's nothing so freeing when you're a student as the ability to say "screw it!" once in a while and splash out on some quality entertainment. It may take a few weeks to get here, yay international mail, but before too long the sound of my laughter is gonna echo across the Atlantic once more.
And all because I slipped out of the loop when I went back to Uni.

On the advice of one of my flatmates and his GF who'd been to see it on a date, me and 6 others from our group went to see the movie UP this sunday. Maybe you've seen it already, if so this may just be telling you what you've already heard/come to believe yourself, but if not then the very first thing I'll say to you... GO SEE IT! GO SEE IT NOW!! :O
First of all, its nice to see a kids film that doesn't talk down to kids. This film is rated 'U' by the UK system, rating it suitable for anyone older than THREE. ^^ And yet the truth is that this wonderfully uplifting yet tragic story shows many things that were sorrowful enough to make most of us tear up, and some pretty damn grim moments. If this movie was a live action flick, it would have needed to be rated a '15' at least, due to having guns being fired at humans and visible blood being spilled as a result of violence! Honestly though, without giving anything away for those who haven't seen it... it had some moments that are so real... too real almost, like they shouldn't be put in a movie. And yet, they so should! And I'm damn glad they did put them in this one.
Over the Eisner years there wasn't much good to say about Disney. But this latest effort from Disney/Pixar... geez, thats a step up and a half!! <3 I love it, and I hope anyone else who has or will see it will too.
Now, onto other things.
Its halloween very soon, and I have my costume all figured out. My hair's already been cut short, and I have the blond dye ready and waiting for the 30th. ^^ You thing I'm kidding? ^^ Nope! I've gone all out this year, just like last year.
Speaking of last year in fact... here's a rarity for most of you, a RL picture of me... albeit looking slightly more... Jokey, than normal.

That second one was taken by my Academic Mother (St. Andrews tradition, I'll explain in another journal). She said it terrified her. ^^
Anyhow, this year my costume is gonna be even bigger and better than last year's. If you haven't heard of Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog... well, go youtube it now. ^^ If you're still confused, look at this sketch I had commissioned last year.

Well, imagine me dressed like that. Slightly less roo-like, and yet... ^^
So yeah, Halloween is gonna rawk this year, just like last!!

Its quite easy to fall into a routine, and from there to leave it, and allow that routine to become a rut. Eventually even a pleasant rut can become a bit... well, same-y... :3 That's why I recommend doing what me and a couple of friends did just a few days ago. We were sitting down in my living room, talking about random stuff, when it occurred to us that the evening meal was very nearly upon us. Talk turned to what manner of pasta or rice dish was gonna be cooked and eaten, and it was then... it hit me.
THE NEED FOR MEAT!
I've never been very carnivorous in my eating habits. I've never demanded lots of red meat in my diet, in fact I prefer chicken and fish to most other meats. However, since I came to University living with two vegetarians has meant that my natural intake of meat has dropped somewhat simply due to there being less of it in the house. So on this particular day, I found myself craving meat rather badly all of a sudden. My thought process then veered off somewhat, stating quite clearly that not only was I wanting meat, I didn't want to have to cook that night. Yet as nice as they are, the local take out places are all either the kind of place you go after a night at the pub, or the kind of place you go when you have enough cash to go to a restaurant instead.
That was when I voiced the question that made the day of everyone in that room.
"Shall we go out for a meal? Just... turn up at a restaurant and see if they have a table for us?"
The answer, a resounding yes. We were all so excited by the thought of just spontaneously going out for a meal, without a reason or a plan, that by the time we got ready and headed out it was already a damn good evening. ^^ We wandered up onto North Street, just 3 blocks from my house, and peered in the window of a very nice restaurant that serves classic and italian cuisine. We went in, asked, and were overjoyed to find they had a table for 3 that had just become available due to a cancellation!
We sat down, and the very nice waitress came over with the specials board for us to read. I saw it, and my eyes lit up.
At the top of the starters.
Seared hand dived scallops with pancetta, a rocket salad and some kind of saucey thing.
At the top of the main courses.
Aberdeen Angus Steak in a whisky and black peppercorn sauce.
...
I came.
...
:3
Honestly though, I couldn't have found a better pair of dishes if I'd gone to a 3 Michelin star restaurant! They were EXACTLY what my belly was looking for, and I didn't care that they were two of the priciest things on the menu. I had some money to spend, and this was sooooo gonna be worth it.
If you've never eaten scallops... oh god... <3
If you've never eaten a good aberdeen angus sirloin... oh freaking god... <3 <3
If I ever meet someone who can cook like that restaurant, I'm gonna marry 'em. :3 :3 :3 And if anyone here can, I'll marry/give sexual favours to you if you'll come to St. Andrews and cook for me.
If you hadn't guessed by now... it was a freaking heavenly meal.
And all because we decided to be spontaneous. ^^
Do it. But don't plan on doing it. ^^ You'll enjoy yourselves, I swear.

I wrote this on a whim just fifteen minutes ago, during the first free moment I've had in the past few days. Curse unexpected last minute rushing! I wasn't particularly thinking along this train of thought, it just came to me. I know that sounds hackneyed, but its true! I'm still rather proud of it though. o.O Any thoughts would be welcome.
You're a rebel today. Break the rules; go on, No one will care. All's fair in love and war. So why not in mediocrity, too?
Don't forget to shoot, When the messenger tells you, stop. No one will act. In fact, they'll love you for it. Today you're a visionary.
Today you're a hero. Live life beyond your means. No one will dare, To care, inviting your wrath. You are the dream of the world.
Watch the shadows. You're a target today. No-one will cry. When you die, another will rise. Time runs out for everyone.
Today you're a scandal. Your pride has come and gone. No-one will fight, Your plight, your fall; front page news. A rebel's latest conquest.
In the hearts of a few, Echoes of your dream live on. No-one will live, Or give, or dream, quite like you. You're a memory today.
A dusty shelf in a dusty shop. Bound in paper and ink. No-one will forget, Do you regret it, or accept the truth? Today, you're a legend.
What are you today?

» University News!
So I've had my place saved at St. Andrews University for a while now, and as it gets closer to me actually heading out into that world of glorious academia I'm finally starting to get some of the important stuff together. Student loans? Waiting for the University to get back to me. Course modules for my Zoology degree, looking over them and weighing up the pros and cons. Accomodation? Oh, whats this... ohh look, its a letter telling me where I'm going to live!
Woo!
I've been looking forward to this for a while, and finally I know! :) Some of the information was a bit surprising, but its still awesome news.
First of all, where am I staying? Well, the answer is John Burnel Hall, one of the oldest and most central of the University residential buildings. It used to be an old hotel, and now its an apartment block for students who are going home in the holidays, but want to be catered during term time. I'm gonna go self-catering in my second year, but until then why make my first year more stressful by having to worry about cooking and food prices. :S
Here's some info about it, and pictures! :o
http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~atholl/about.php
When am I going there? 20th of September 2008, thats my first day of University! So soon I'll be able to wave a fond but thankful goodbye to this rural area (lots of great scenery and walks, not so much social life :s) and say hello rural town.
The surprise bit is precisely where I'm gonna be residing, because its not a 2 bedroom apartment, its a 2 person bedroom. Yup, I'm gonna have a roomie! :o This may sound a little bit icky to some folks, as it would mean less privacy, etc, but I'm actually rather thrilled by the idea. I'll still be able to write, chat to folks on msn, etc. And it'll make it so much easier to get to know folks! :) I can't wait to have a university social life after the last year, living in the middle of nowhere with almost all my friends off to uni already, or in other countries. ^^
Well, thats the news for today I believe. Anyone here know any helpful hints for co-existing with a new roomie? I'm sure I'll muddle through, but any advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated! :)

» See this can here, with those stringy, ropey creatures inside? I'm gonna open it now!
So I just saw on the news that Hilary Clinton is in the midst of giving her "I'm not gonna be Prez, vote Obama '08!" speech. Putting aside any issues of who's going to be his VP or what Hilary and Obama think of each other, what do you think is next?
Is Obama gonna get the whole democratic support now, regardless of what happens to Hilary?
Is Obama gonna do a U-turn and screw over the American people now that he doesn't have to face off against Senator Clinton?
Is there any chance of a strong, democratic presidency this term?
And, if I have any Republican folks watching this, how do you feel? I really don't wanna bash on you, and I'll be annoyed if anyone else does. I just wanna know what you think of the McCain vs Obama battle. Who's gonna win, and if you truly beleive your candidate is gonna do it? Why should he?
I know this issue has been covered by 10000000 other folks, but I'm Scottish and politically ignorant. Help enlighten me!

» The U.S Government... admitting it was wrong?
I bash on the Bush administration alot, and I don't apologise for that at all. But today I heard something which kinda pissed me off... kinda really pissed me off. The US government finally took its finger out and pledged to do something about Global Warming. Not much... but at least they've admitted that their stance of no change was wrong.
However, not 5 minutes after hearing it on the news? I get someone coming up to me and saying "Hey, maybe Bush isn't such a bad guy. If his government can make an awesome decision like that, they can't be entirely stupid!"
ARGH!!!!
I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that people should be praised for doing the obviously right thing? You need to take the magnet off the lid of your moral compass. Yeah its great when people do good things, but if someone busts into a school with a nuclear bomb, then decides not to detonate it? Do you treat them like a national hero as a result?! Pollution could destroy our civilisation in a matter of centuries if it keeps going the way it is now, and its every country's duty to do everything physically possible to reduce their output of dangerous emmissions etc. Sure people can do individual things, but unless the governments put money into researching alternative fuels, developing more efficient hybrid vehicles and power supplies etc? We're fighting a losing battle.
So, when I hear people praising the U.S government for not choosing profit over the eventual destruction of our childrens childrens children? Forgive me for not joining in the party. They made the right choice, and thats great, but making one token gesture under pressure from the entire world doesn't make up for years of SELFISH, ARROGANT, SELF-SERVING BULLSHIT!
When the Shrub pledges billions of dollars to eradicate African debt, or provides a decent system of welfare to ensure that citizens of his own country can live productive lives without needing to either feel like lepers or being able to sponge off the state? Then I'll give him a round of applause. Those are political decisions, and thus if he makes a good one, I'll recognise it. But why the heck should I give him recognition simply for not signing a death sentence on our planet?!
* huffs * Am I the only one who sees a problem here, or what?

On this date, in the year of our lord nineteen hundred and eighty eight, a 'roo was born. Me!
Yup, its my birthday! Another year older, another year wiser, and this year in particular? Another year to fill with wild and wonderful adventures! There really is, after all, nothing in life like living it to the full. You hear it all the time; 'sieze the day, don't let the oppertunity pass you by, act now to avoid disappointment' but how many people actually apply that advice to their own lives? Far too few, in my experience.
So, in this next year? I'm gonna do everything I can not only to make it exciting and worthwhile for myself, but for all those whose lives I am a part of as well!

The Seventh Book shuts, and I Squee with delight. As of 10am this morning (I stopped at 10pm last night at the start of Chapter 31, pg488, and started again at 8ish) I have finished the final Harry Potter book.
No I will not spoilerficate anyone with details, for truly this is one of those books where EVERYTHING is a spoiler, but... well... it was AMAZING! I know HP was originally a series for younger readers, but I liked it dammit, and this last book was certainly NOT for kids anyway.
Anyhow, its over now, and I am left with nothing definite to read in the coming summers, as well as a growing dread of how they're gonna butcher this book when it comes to movie-making time. Huzzah!

Honestly though, I think its gonna be kinda fun. I plan on packing a drink and a small lunch and hiking out to a lovely shaded bay about 3 Kilometres away...

» St. Patrick's Day - The Aftermath.
All over the world today, people will be waking up, holding their heads and asking "Why god, why did I open that second bottle of Glen Fiddich!?"
I myself don't drink, but as I sit here and imagine all the groaning, whimpering people reluctantly climbing out of their beds this morning, I can't help but think...
...why hasn't someone tried to invent hangover free alcahol?
I understand that there are lots of chemical factors to consider, and that to get rid of the chemical changes which cause a hangover basically means getting rid of the alcaholic content of the drinks, but... surely in a world where drinking is a life choice for some people, there must be at least one lush/scientist out there with the knowledge to do a little research project in the wake of his party nights.
Just a thought for those who are weeping in a post-booze malaise this morning.

» Comic Relief...
For all those of you who don't know, although I'm pretty sure many of you will, Comic Relief is a yearly 'Telathon' of sorts, during which money is raised to help disadvantaged people in third world countries and here in the UK. Its basically a big charity bash which the whole country (in theory) gets involved in. I know there are critics of such programmes, not to mention people who think we should spend money taking care of the problems within our own countries before looking outside (don't get me started though...) but I myself think its a very worthwhile thing to take part in, and have done on several occasions by raising money via sponsorship as well as donating it out of my own pocket.
For anyone who wants to have a gander at what I'm rambling about? www.bbc.co.uk/rednoseday is the place to go. Or if you have some sort of sattilite tv then its on BBC1 all night.
I have to wonder though... are there events like this, on a national scale, in other countries? I know there have been odd things like Live8 every few years, but I mean a yearly thing. Surely big places like the US, and countries with their own links to third world countries have things like this going on. Don't they?

» Oxford? Bah. Harvard? Riff-raff!
Actually, I'd be honoured to attend either of those fine and prestigious Universities, but being in Scotland? I've not really got the option to do so. Still... I guess there are some good Universities where I am now, Universities that would be happy to take me in!
Yeah... Aberdeen has offered me unconditional places in both Zoology or Environmental Science, as has Glasgow. Stirling offered me an unconditional Environmental Sciences place too. But... I don't think I'm going to accept any of them to be honest. Why, you ask me? Why would I not want to attend any of those universities?
Well... maybe because... I got an unconditional acceptance to Saint Andrews!!!!
For all of you who are not Scottish? St. Andrews is the Oxford, or Harvard, or whatever El-Posho university you wish to think of, of Scotland. It is second to none in this country, and the number of people from my area who have been there...? Well... I'm in the vast minority.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not being cocky, nor am I going to be complacent. They expect you to work damn hard at St. Andrews, and I'm not deluding myself by thinking that I'm going to be half as smart as the others who make the grade to arrive there in my year. But... goddammit... St. Andrews University, studying Zoology!! Its a dream come true!
Party in my journal and everyone's invited! ^^

» Big Brother caught in political debate?
Oi vey, shoot me now. If you haven't heard about this issue yet (and I mean this on a worldwide scale, its been covered in the New York Times!) then you must be living under a damn rock!
For those of you who do live under rocks though? Jade Goodie, international dumbass and celebrity icon based on her original Big Brother appearence, has been accused of racism towards an Indian Bollywood star in there with her. Now at the best of times racism pisses me off, but this?! I think if Jade gets lynched when she leaves I wouldn't be at all surprised, or bothered!
We all know she's a dumbass, but how fucking stupid do you have to be in order to call an Indian "Shilpa Poppadom" on national television, and laugh about it afterwards?!
Yes this may be blown way out of proportion, after all it wasn't as though she used any of the traditional racial slurs and she does claim it wasn't motivated... but still! Sure you can argue with people on the show, it makes for good TV, but don't bring ethnics into it! Argh!
For the record? I used to think Jade was silly, but funny and well meaning. I now disown her on behalf of the British nation. Lets all evict her and watch the booooooooooofest commence!

» Artist appreciation day.
Today is officially (ha) Artist Appreciation Day, thanks to some insight by those at 2 Sense! :D
Basically the idea behind this day is that we say a big thanks to all those whose art we enjoy on a regualar basis. In short, show them that we appreciate all their hard work. Plus its a holiday thats not based on dead people or Jesus, and thats always good!
So, in the spirit of the season and whatnot? I would like to put out my thanks to the following artists. They may not know me, and I highly doubt many of them will read this, but I want all those who do take the time to read my journal to look these fine furs up!
Katalina - www.furriehaven.com
She's a dear friend of mine and is talented in many of the artistic fields. She can draw, she can write, she can make wonderful jewellery! Her forte though? It has to be poetry. She has written some tragically beautiful poetry in her time, and those are still the peices which I recall first when I think of all her efforts. She's also starting up a new furry website at the moment. Its not very big yet, but the forum is already a very close and friendly community.
So, here's a big thank you to the kewt kitty! I appreciate you!
Jon Stelter, AKA J. Tigerclaw - www.fletcherapts.com
JT is a guy I've known for a while, but at the same time I've never got to 'know' him, which is a shame because it seems like we share a lot of interests.Of course, whereas I merely like music and art he kicks ass at making music and art! Perhaps over the coming months, when I find myself with more free time, I'll be able to truly talk with him and affirm the friendship we laid the foundations of when we did talk a while back. And in true artistic appreciation tradition? I do plan on asking for a commission from him as soon as he's free of his current batch! (I never really understood how much work commission artists go through.)
Yay for JT! I appreciate you!
Kacey Miyagami - www.otonashi.net
A very talented woman with talent to rival the likes of Dark Natasha. Its been my ambition to commission her for a while now, and when I get the money to do so? I would very much like to get a cute piccie done; either of me or of some of my more well known literary characters. (I say well known... but thats relative in terms of the furry world, right?)
A big cheer for Kacey; I appreciate you!
D.C Simpson. - www.ozyandmillie.org, www.idrewthis.org
David Simpson is not an artist that I know personally, but one I admire nonetheless. His furry comic Ozy and Millie is both sweet and thought provoking, and his other comic? I Drew This, is wonderful in its own way, as a Liberal view of politics is something that I find very interesting considering the current state of affairs. I've already shown my appreciation for him by littering my room with Ozy and Millie prints, but here's to him again!
Hooray D.C Simpson. I appreciate you!
2, the Ranting Gryphon - www.ranting-gryphon.com
Comedy, and music, are both art forms in their own right. That is why I include 2 as an artist that I appreciate. He's not just a guy who goes around yelling about shit, he's an amazingly funny guy who just happens to yell about shit on the side! Plus? Some of his music is damned cool! I wonder if he could pull off a Bill Bailey... working his music into his comedy. Regardless though, he's still one of the funniest comic artists I've ever heard; and I've heard a lot of comic artists, plus? A fur!
Yay 2 Gryphon, I appreciate the wonderment you give to my brainage, and the DRAGON-MEAT-SAUSAGE too!
So folks? Look up these people and see how amazing they all are! And remember, Artist Appreciation Day is for writers too, so someone appreciate me for gods sakes!
